I Am Not I

I am not I.
I am this one
walking beside me whom I do not see,
whom at times I manage to visit,
and whom at other times I forget;
the one who remains silent while I talk,
the one who forgives, sweet, when I hate,
the one who takes a walk when I am indoors,
the one who will remain standing when I die.

I Shall Not Return

I shall not return. And night, mildly warm, serene and silent, will lull the world, under beams of its solitary moon.
My body will not be there, and through the wide-open window, a refreshing breeze will come inquiring for my soul.
I don't know if any await the end of my double absence, or who will kiss my memory amidst caresses and weeping.
But, there will be stars and flowers, there will be sighs and hopes, and love in the avenues in the shadows of the trees.
And that piano will be playing as in this untroubled night, and no one there to listen, pensive, by my window frame.

Rose Of The Sea

The white moon takes the sea away from the sea
and gives it back to the sea. Beautiful,
conquering by means of the pure and tranquil,
the moon compels the truth to delude itself
that it is truth become whole, eternal, solitary,
though it is not so.
Divine plainness,
you pierce the familiar certainty, you place
a new soul into whatever is real.
Unpredictable rose! you took the rose away
from the rose, and you could give back
the rose to the rose.

I have a feeling that my boat
has struck, down there in the depths,
against a great thing.
And nothing
happens! Nothing...Silence...Waves...

- Nothing happens? Or has everything happened,
and are we standing now, quietly, in the new life?

Who Knows What Is Going On

Who knows what is going on on the other side of each hour?

How many times the sunrise was
there, behind a mountain!

How many times the brilliant cloud piling up far off
was already a golden body full of thunder!

This rose was poison.

That sword gave life.

I was thinking of a flowery meadow
at the end of a road,
and found myself in the slough.

I was thinking of the greatness of what was human,
and found myself in the divine.

It is the sea, in the earth.
Colors of the south, in the winter sun,
contain the noisy shiftings
of the sea and the coasts...
Tomorrow in the sea!- I say, rather, in the earth
that moves, now, into the sea!

Mariner's Ideal Epitaph

One must, to find your tomb,
search the firmament.
- Your death rains from a star.
A tombstone does not weigh you down, it being a universe
of dream- .
Oblivious you are
to everything -dead in earth and sea and sky.

Night Piece

February 3rd

The sea with no waves we recognize,
with no stations on its route,
only water and moon, night after night!

My thought goes back to the land,
someone else's land, belonging to the one
going through it on trains at night,
through the same place at the same hour
as before . . .

Remote mother,
sleeping earth,
powerful and faithful arms,
the same quiet lap for all
—tomb of eternal life
with the same decorations freshened—
earth, mother, always
true to yourself, waiting for
the sad gaze
of the wandering eyes!

My thought goes back to the land,
—the olive groves at sunrise—
outlined sharply in the white
or golden or yellow moonlight,
that look forward to the coming back
of those humans who are neither its slaves nor its masters,
but who love it anyway . . .
